Discovered : Known since antiquity as charcoal and diamond.
Found in : Diamond, graphite, coal, organic compounds.
Used for : Pencils, carbon paper (papier carbone), steel, semiconductors, radiocarbon dating.
Remarkable : The only element forming two completely opposite minerals: graphite, one of the softest substances known, and diamond, the hardest natural substance. Carbon-14 allows dating of organic materials up to 50,000 years old.
