Discovered : Carl Wilhelm Scheele identified it in 1774. Johan Gahn isolated it.
Found in : Rhodonite, rhodochrosite, pyrolusite, manganite.
Used for : Steel production, batteries, pigments, fertilizers.
Remarkable : Steel cannot be rolled or forged without manganese. Vast nodules on the ocean floor contain billions of tonnes of it.
