Discovered : William Hyde Wollaston, 1803. Named after the asteroid Pallas, discovered the same year.
Found in : Native palladium (rare), cooperite, braggite. Usually recovered from platinum ores.
Used for : Catalytic converters in cars, hydrogen purification, dentistry, electronics.
Remarkable : A single gram of palladium can absorb up to 900 times its own volume of hydrogen. Catalytic converters in petrol and diesel vehicles consume most of the world production.
