Discovered : Jons Jacob Berzelius, 1817. Named after Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon.
Found in : Native selenium (rare), clausthalite, naumannite. Usually a byproduct of copper refining.
Used for : Solar cells, glass coloring (red), photocopiers, dietary supplements.
Remarkable : Essential to human health in trace amounts, toxic in larger doses. Selenium gave its name to the photovoltaic effect before silicon took over in solar technology.
