Discovered : Known since antiquity. Alloyed with copper to make bronze from around 3500 BCE.
Found in : Cassiterite (SnO2), the primary ore. Also stannite.
Used for : Tin cans, solder, bronze alloys, organ pipes, pewter.
Remarkable : The discovery of tin bronze was so transformative it defined an entire era of human prehistory: the Bronze Age. Tin also emits a characteristic crackling sound when bent, known as the tin cry.
