Skutterudite has tiny cages built into its crystal, and slipping loose atoms inside them seems to trap heat while letting electricity pass almost untouched. That rare split is why skutterudite became a model material for thermoelectric generators, the solid-state devices that turn waste heat straight into power, including on deep-space probes.
